We welcome one of the most improving keepers in the company Chris who keeps goal for Motley Barnets and face GSH in the REDS Cup semi-final this Sunday at Greatness.
Hi, and thanks for taking time out to talk to me.
Greatness is the third P.P.V your team have starred on with the last two appearances ending in defeat at the hands of rivals and friends City Seagulls. How do you find the whole P.P.V experience?
All teams want to be part of the P.P.V experience so it’s an honour that this is our third consecutive one. Our previous two results have come as a loss by a single goal against the Seagulls, and while we still feel hard done by its water under the bridge as far as we’re concerned and its all about the REDS Cup this Sunday!!!!
Its Motley Barnets first ever season and you have done reasonably well Tell us about your league campaign thus far
Honestly, it’s been far from consistent. Not sure if you know this but we have failed to put more than 3 consecutive wins together and that’s not even Playoff-challenging form. After getting 3 out of a possible 8 points last week I feel that our league campaign is all but lost. Shame really because the season kicked off with a promising start with an 11-1 win against LA Renaissance/Drive By FC/V.I.P’s.
Our defending can be slack at the best of times, while our finishing can be atrocious. I’m actually kind of glad the sports centre has a roof because if it didn’t I’m sure that NASA would have complained about us launching unauthorised objects into space.
At the start of the season we are sure you would have settled for a place in the Reds Cup Final but was it a realistic target of yours?
Right at the start of the season, I would’ve said no. But our Cup performances in my opinion have been second to none this season (minus the 7-0 thrashing we got from the Playerz). We beat Premiership opposition in the Pudlians and handed Friday’s Cyprus United their first defeat. Not bad considering half our players didn’t really know each other.
GSH are team with great physical presence and also have added firepower in the form off the Highlight of the Week Mark Quinn, How do you rate your opposition?
I admire GSH a lot. Like us, they’ve been really inconsistent this season. I’ve got a lot of time for Mark Quinn as well. He’s the first to admit if he’s had a bad game and doesn’t play the blame game with his team-mates. You’ve got to admire that in any sort of player. Along with the likes of Hayden and Dennis, I know that Ollie, the two Andy’s and Fleff will have to give me a lot of protection in front of goal.
Manager James McDade made some very useful pre season signings notably those from K.Kobras and for a while you suffered stick about that connection, how have the Kobras players fitted in and who in particular from that group has shone in season 06?
People raised a few eyebrows when the Kobra’s joined us (none more so than Luke Maslin who made an 11th hour attempt to snap them up for FC Heat) but they gelled in straight away. I can’t pinpoint anyone from that group and say that they shone the brightest. Ollie is always going to be Mr. Reliable at the back, Nick’s passion to win is always visible to see, Johnny’s ‘Paolo Wanchope-esque’ runs and ‘Shaun Goater-esque’ goal tally is second to none while Carl is our very own Carlos Tevez. He never gives up and covers every inch of laminating flooring and scores crucial goals. Apart from the Kobra’s I’d also like to give a special mention to Inter Girls’ Andy Hastings who has been exceptional all season.
Sunday Division One keeper position has been a hot topic all season long with FC Heat’s Luke Maslin residing over the last 3 matches but with calls for him to be replaced we ask do you consider yourself a contender for the sought after N01 jersey and what other keepers do you rate from all of the companies keepers?
I’m going to be honest and say no. I don’t consider myself a contender for the Sunday Division 1 keeper jersey. Maslin was picked because of his club performances and that is all that needs to be said. I have more off-days than on-days and even I don’t know what form I’m in before the games kicked off. If I make one great save right at the beginning then my confidence grows and I throw myself at everything that comes towards me but if I don’t have to do anything for a while I have a tendency to switch off. My positioning is questionable as well. But there are far better keepers than me in our league. Dave from Seagulls is one, as are the 300 Spartans, GSH, and Toon Army shot-stoppers.
Finally Greatness is nearly here and as we all know GSH are the opponents so Chris how do you see the semi-finals going and IF you do progress can you beat waiting finalist FC Heat?
I’m going to have to be cliché about this and say it will be close. We’ve only played GSH once this season and lost 7-6. Again, in that game we took the lead and lost it. Saying that we don’t want a hat trick of P.P.V defeats under our belt and I’m sure that everyone will bring their ‘A’ game.
As far as FC Heat goes, I don’t know. We’re only taking one game at a time and we’ll cross that bridge when (or if) we come to it.
