SUNDAY LEAGUE CUP FINAL
NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS
Playerz vs City Rejects
A rivalry built over season 06 culminated in this final duel for the League Cup title. Playerz always pleasant on the eye were at the bare five men while City Rejects were missing their key quality men Rob and Moggy. Only one could walk away champions and it was won with a bang!!!
The match will be remembered for things more than the actual winners of this tie and the game itself and we will get to why later on.
The match started with both teams looking quite nervous but it was the Rejects who settled the best and opened the scoring early on as Carl motored down the left to latch on to a Gaz pass and the blonde haired utility player crashed a wonderful effort into the top corner despite being at a difficult angle. The Playerz were struggling to play their usual game as Rejects finally came out of the shadows to show how dominate they could be as the impressive Jason made it 2-0 stealing the ball of Stu to hit a superb strike that nestled nicely in the back of Jecko’s goal. Playerz pulled one back thanks to Muzo who then lashed widely over moments later in what would have been a turning point in the game but instead Rejects mounted their own attack which resulted in the final goal of the half from Mark Quinn.
The second half started much in the same fashion as the first with Rejects all over their counterparts and soon made it 4-1 with Jason hitting his second of the game. Rejects were in total control and even a second from the Playerz midfielder Nash never really gave the neutrals or Playerz supporters hope they could actually turn this game round. Playerz were becoming increasingly frustrated with their below par performance and Stu epitomised that with a wild strike that sailed high and wide.
As the game was closing up Rejects Danny put the icing on the cake with a wonderfully taken goal to take the score to 5-2.
The major talking point came in the last 10 seconds though as Rejects fifth goal scorer Danny Elkin was in possession when Muzo went in strong and unfortunately Danny was close to the wall and the force of Muzo’s challenge sent Danny into the wall and back of it and into Muzo an then Danny returned to be reacquainted with the wall.. The result more claret than a hooligans fight fest. All concerns turned to Danny who sat their blooded up and in a daze.
This bought and end to the final and kind of overshadowed the match but the fact is Rejects finally won a ‘Big’ one and will for ever be able to refer to Danny’s head if anyone calls them bridesmaids from now on!
