5 Star Promotions League of Champions GOLD CUP FINAL Merchants vs Cov Legion March 2009

Cov Legion have promised so much in the past and have been one of these elite teams that have never been able to topple the mighty Merchants while the latter are chasing a history making 5 trophy haul this season…so would Merchants net the 1^st one on their quest or would Cov Legion rise to the occasion.

It was Legion who set out their stall early on, physical and direct and this kind of tempo unnerved Merchants with Peden settling well and going close within the first few minutes it was however his partner in crime Danny who slotted Legion ahead finishing off a wonderful pass by Mercid with a shot that beat Merchant keeper Sucki at his near post.
Merchants got a grip finally and started to turn the ball over in their fluent style we expect every time the pass was made a Legion player would be clipping at their heels, Merchants first chance fell to the feet of Meluci but his effort was comfortably saved by Brad. Danny a former Young player of the season unearthed a side of him that we haven’t seen for a long time and no it wasn’t his deadly finishing it was the red mist that use to descend quite regularly and a lash out on Merchants Brian Ndlovu saw him sent to the sin bin.
It took Merchants all off 30 secs to make the man advantage pay as Young Muzzy coolly slotted home the same player than crashed a half volley against the bar as Merchants dominated the play but amazingly top hitman Thommo created space down the right to smash home and take Legion 2-1 up.
As the Merchants upped their game so upped the tension and Legion were down to three man after Peden followed his chum to the sin bin also for lashing out, the pressure was really on but Legion held out and with them no sooner back to 5 men Danny was shown a red card and it was the walk of shame that ended the half.
The four men Legion came under siege from the whistle and Meluci struck to equalise and a third was soon added by the same player, the game was dead and it was literally survival now for Legion as Merchants punished the lesser manned team Meluci soon got himself a hat trick picking up the ball from a broken down Legion attack to smack home.
The game cruised to an end with Brian and Mel finally finishing off the tie and with this in the bag would anyone bet against them clean sweeping and again standing alone as the Very Best.
