A position both teams would have taken prior to the season, one step away from a final and the chance of GREATNESS
Both teams started the game in confident fashion with GSH having the early chances with striker Mark Quinn and Hayden both shooting wide. Barnets who had several experienced 5 a siders in their team were failing to make their knowledge show as they were failing to string 2-3 passes together and every attack they mounted come to nothing. International star Nick Janda was proving the brightest spark on the pitch but even the Barnet midfielder was struggling to find that sprinkle of quality that was needed to break the deadlock. It was down to Jez from GSH to ram home the opener as the stylish midfielder found space and hit his drive past the despairing Barnets keeper Chris. There was not much more of note that took place as the first half came to a halt.
It seemed both teams were having stage fright as Motley Barnets were living up to their tag as the most ‘Boring’ team in the leagues but GSH were not putting up much more to plead their case against that tag being labelled to them. Then the only moment of quality came as the Big Johnny Wilkinson strode through the GSH rearguard like a hippopotamus on speed and licked a delicious strike into the top corner to bring the Barnets level. GSH went chasing the game after sitting back pretty much most of the second half. Time was ticking and the prospect of Penalties were looming large with the time now down to 2 minutes remaining the ball bounced kindly to Mark who hit a sweet half volley to break the Barnets hearts and take GSH through to their first ever Cup Final. The final whistle bought whistles and chants of “James out” and “you don’t know what you are doing” ringing through the halls as Barnets trudged off to contemplate the what if’s.
